Map markers
Every marker on the map is color-coded by category. Tap any marker to see a popup with its details.
- Blue line β your planned route.
- Green "βΆ Start" and red "β¬ End" labels β the first and last points of your route.
- Numbered circles β the stops on a planned trip, in driving order.
- π ΏοΈ squares β parking near your stops on driving trips, marked FREE, PAID, or ? when the fee is unknown.
- Category-colored circles β points of interest: brown for geocaches, green for parks, amber for museums, blue-gray for historic sites, teal for viewpoints, and orange for trailheads.
- Gold circles with a thick border β places you've logged a visit to.
- Dark brown and gold circles β logged geocache finds.
Getting the best results
- Use well-known place names with a state, such as Denver, CO or Chicago, IL. Vague names can match the wrong place.
- Long routes (500+ miles) turn up the most points of interest along the way, because the search area is larger.
- Points of interest come from OpenStreetMap, so bigger cities have more results. Rural or remote areas may return few β or no β results for some categories.
- You can plan a route in the Route tab and a combined trip in Plan me a Trip at the same time; both appear on the map.
Troubleshooting
- "Could not find location" β check the spelling or try a more specific city name.
- No results for a category β the area may not have OpenStreetMap data for it. Try a larger nearby city or a different category.
- The route fails with an error β the routing service may be temporarily unavailable. Wait a few seconds and try again.
- The map is blank on the web β use a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari with JavaScript turned on.
- A yellow banner in the Log tab β your visits are being saved on your device only until the connection to the community map is restored.
Every error appears as a banner at the top of the panel or as a pop-up, so a tap never silently does nothing. Still stuck? Get in touch.
